In the 2018-2019 season, Canadian mezzo-soprano Carolyn Sproule returns to Opéra de Montréal as Maddalena in Rigoletto and Flosshilde in Das Rheingold, makes her Michigan Opera Theatre debut as Olga in Eugene Onegin, returns to the Canadian Opera Company as Emilia in Otello, and returns to the Metropolitan Opera for her fifth consecutive season for their productions of Otello and Falstaff. Highlights of future seasons include returns in leading roles to The Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and Opéra de Montréal, and debuts at San Diego Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria.   

In the previous season, Ms. Sproule made her Canadian Opera Company debut as Maddalena in Rigoletto, returned to Vancouver Opera for Olga in Eugene Onegin, returned to the Metropolitan Opera for Thais, and made her Roy Thomson Hall debut as a soloist in their Bravissimo! New Year’s Eve concert.    

Highlights of past seasons include a highly acclaimed European debut singing Erika in Samuel Barber’s Vanessa at the Wexford Festival, and subsequently her Italian debut at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari as Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera. Ms. Sproule debuted at The Metropolitan Opera in 2015 as the Sandman in Hansel and Gretel and since returned singing the Page in Salome and Inez in Il Trovatore. She has also been on  The Metropolitan Opera roster for their productions of Falstaff, Otello, Thais, Eugene Onegin, Le Nozze di Figaro, The Death of Klinghoffer, Manon, and Cavalleria Rusticana. Concert highlights include the alto soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Minnesota Orchestra as well as alto soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Aspen Music Festival under Robert Spano.  

As a resident of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, Ms. Sproule sang the roles of Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Countess Charlotte in A Little Night Music, Mercédès in Carmen, Zulma in L’Italiana in Algeri, Third Lady in The Magic Flute, and Vlasta in the US premiere of The Passenger which she reprised at The Lincoln Center Festival. 

Ms. Sproule also furthered her training with residencies at the Merola Opera Program at San Francisco Opera where she was featured in Postcard from Morocco. During the summers of 2013 and 2014 she was a Filene Young Artist at Wolf Trap Opera where she sang Meg Page in Falstaff, Sesto in Giulio Cesare, and a recital with Steven Blier.                  

Ms. Sproule is a native of Montréal, Canada and is a graduate of The Juilliard School (BM 2010), and Rice University (MM 2012). She also participated in residencies at The Banff Centre, Aspen Opera Theatre, Merola Opera Program, Wolf Trap Opera (Filene Young Artist), and the Houston Grand Opera Studio.

COSÍ FAN TUTTE WITH THE MET OPERA
Carolyn makes her house-debut with the Met Opera singing the leading role of Dorabella in Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte. Her performance is on February 21, 2020. metopera.org

Carolyn is Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with Opéra de Montréal from September 14 through 22, 2019. operademontreal.com



OTELLO WITH THE CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY
From April 27 through May 21, 2019, Carolyn joins the COC for Verdi’s Otello as Emilia. coc.ca
