Named one of CBC’s Top 30 Canadian Classical Musicians under 30, Samuel Chan has been praised by critics for his “naturally produced, forwardly placed, attractive baritone” (Ludwig van Toronto). A native of Calgary, Samuel is currently based in Toronto member of the Canadian Opera Company’s (COC) young artist program, the COC Ensemble Studio.
Samuel begins the 2018/19 season with opening night gala of the Elora Festival, and gala concert Cantos para hermanar al mundo in Torreon, Mexico. Upon returning to the COC in the fall, company engagements include the Captain/Eugene Onegin understudy in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, as well as originating the role of the Sychophantic Senator in the world premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s Hadrian. In the winter, Samuel will be performing the role of Dandini (Tiny Dan) in the Ensemble Studio’s family production of La Cenerentola (COC Wow Factor), the lead role of Daddy in the first workshop of The Old Fools by Ana Sokolovic (to be premiered in the 2021 COC season), and will be understudying the roles of Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte and the role of Oreste’s Guardian in R. Strauss’s Elektra. Samuel closes his time in the Ensemble Studio with the role of the Sergeant/understudying Marcello in Puccini’s La bohème, as well as performing Marcello in the COC Ensemble Studio’s performance of La bohème.
Previous season engagements include the Sailor/Aeneas understudy in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, the 2nd Japanese Envoy/Bass 1 Understudy in Stravinsky’s The Nightingale and Other Short Fables, the Usher/Marullo Understudy in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Papageno in the family opera The Magic Victrola, Count Lamoral understudy in R. Strauss’s Arabella (Canadian Opera Company), the Baritone in the workshop of Andrew Balfour’s Mishabooz’s Realm (Highlands Opera Studio), Morales in Bizet’s Carmen (Brott Music Festival), Don Asdrubale, Calandrino, and Gomatz in Mozart’s Lo sposo deluso, L’oca del Cairo, and Zaide (City Opera Vancouver), the roles of Jacob Grimm and the Donkey in Dean Burry’s The Brothers Grimm/The Bremen Town Musicians (Highlands Opera Studio), Yoshimoto in Tom Pinkerton: The Ballad of Butterfly’s Son (Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre workshop), Pastore II/Apollo in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (Cincinnati Chamber Opera), and the Page in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors (Claremont Philharmonic).
Samuel’s concert repertoire includes the role of one of the Evangelists in Arvo Pärt’s Passio (Cincinnati Camerata), J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion/B Minor Mass/Christmas Oratorio, Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs, Jongen’s Mass Op. 130, Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale, and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music (CCM Orchestras).
An avid recitalist, Samuel concentrated his academic studies on German Lieder, and more specifically, late 19th Century/Early 20th Century French Song. Recital credits include performances with the Cincinnati Early Music Festival, Toronto Summer Music Festival, Vancouver Songfire Festival, and the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute.
Samuel is the 2nd prize winner of the 2016 Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio Competition, a regionalist at the 2016 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (MONC) – Northwest Region, a district winner at the 2015 MONC Auditions – Western Canada district, and a 2014 encouragement award winner at the 2014 MONC Auditions – Ohio district. He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and has had further educational training at the National Arts Centre’s Young Artist Programme, Highlands Opera Studio, the Vancouver International Song Institute, Ravinias’ Steans Music Institute, and the Toronto Summer Music Festival.
